How the weekday is calculated
The calculator counts the days from a fixed reference date whose weekday is known (January 1, 1970, a Thursday) and divides by 7. The remainder says how many weekdays to move on from Thursday. Leap years are handled automatically, because the count follows the calendar day by day.
Weekday = (days since Thursday, January 1, 1970 + 4) mod 7, where 0 is Sunday
The same idea is behind Zeller’s congruence, a formula from 1882 that gets the weekday from the day, month and year with a few divisions, and behind the Doomsday rule explained in the questions below.
Questions people ask
What day of the week was I born?
Type your birth date in the box above. The weekday appears on the leaf straight away. The age calculator shows it too, along with your exact age.
Why does a date move one weekday later each year?
A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and 1 day. So a date falls one weekday later the next year, or two weekdays later if February 29 comes in between. That is why Christmas was on a Thursday in 2025 and is on a Friday in 2026.
How far back does it work?
The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar for every date, including dates before it was adopted (1582 in much of Catholic Europe, 1752 in Britain and its colonies, 1918 in Russia). For older historical dates recorded in the Julian calendar, the weekday shown can differ from the one written at the time.
How can I work out the weekday in my head?
The quickest method is John Conway’s Doomsday rule. In every year, 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12, 5/9, 9/5, 7/11, 11/7 and the last day of February all share one weekday, the year’s “doomsday”. In 2026 it is Saturday, so October 10 is a Saturday, and October 24, two weeks later, is too.
