Where Halloween comes from
Halloween grew out of the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter around November 1. When the church set All Saints’ Day (All Hallows) on November 1, the evening before became All Hallows’ Eve, shortened to Halloween.
Irish and Scottish immigrants carried the customs to North America in the 19th century, where trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins and costume parties took their modern form, and spread back around the world from there.
Trick-or-treating times
Most towns do not set official hours, but trick-or-treating usually runs from dusk to about 8 or 9 p.m. on October 31. When Halloween falls on a weekday, some communities hold events on the nearest weekend instead, so check local announcements.
