Why December 25?
The Bible does not give a date for the birth of Jesus. The earliest record of Christmas being celebrated on December 25 is a Roman calendar from AD 336. The date sits close to the winter solstice and to existing Roman midwinter festivals, which probably helped it spread.
Some Orthodox churches still follow the older Julian calendar for church feasts, so their December 25 currently lands on January 7 of the everyday calendar. That is why Christmas is celebrated on January 7 in countries such as Russia, Serbia, Ethiopia and Egypt.
Counting sleeps
“Sleeps until Christmas” counts the nights between now and Christmas morning, so it equals the calendar days left. On Christmas Eve the answer is one sleep. The countdown above shows it once Christmas is less than 100 days away.
Shopping and delivery deadlines
Carriers publish last-posting dates every autumn, usually in the week before December 25 for standard post within a country, and earlier for international mail. Check your carrier’s list, and count back in business days, since most carriers do not deliver on public holidays.
