Why January 1?
The Roman calendar fixed January 1 as the start of the civil year in 153 BC, when newly elected consuls began taking office on that day. Across medieval Europe many places used other dates, such as March 25, and England kept March 25 as the legal new year until 1752. Today almost every country uses January 1 for the civil calendar, while many cultures also keep their own new year, such as Chinese New Year or the Islamic new year.
