How the date is set
Diwali follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. The main day, when Lakshmi Puja is performed, is the Amavasya (new moon) of the month of Kartika, which usually falls between mid-October and mid-November. Because the calendar follows the moon, the date moves by up to a few weeks from year to year.
Panchang (almanac) makers sometimes disagree by a day, depending on when the new moon begins locally, so the date can differ between regions and between India and other countries. We only list years where published sources agree; check your local temple or community for the exact day.
Five days of celebration
Diwali is a five-day festival in much of India: Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), Lakshmi Puja on the main night, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. Homes are cleaned and lit with oil lamps (diyas), families exchange sweets and gifts, and fireworks light up the night.
It is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs (as Bandi Chhor Divas) and Jains, and is a public holiday in India, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname.
