Different countries, different days
The countdown above is for the second Sunday of May, the date used in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Japan, Germany, Italy and many other countries. The table also gives the UK and Irish date, Mothering Sunday, which falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, so it moves between March and early April.
Other countries keep their own dates: many Arab countries celebrate on March 21, Mexico on May 10, Thailand on August 12, and France usually on the last Sunday of May.
Where the modern holiday came from
The US holiday grew from a campaign by Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial service for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908. President Woodrow Wilson made the second Sunday in May a national observance in 1914. The British Mothering Sunday is older: it began as a day for returning to one’s “mother church” in the middle of Lent.
Planning ahead
Restaurants are usually fully booked for Mother’s Day brunch and lunch, and flower prices rise in the final week, so booking and ordering a couple of weeks ahead pays off.
