Expected dates, and why they can change
The dates here follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia, where Eid al-Adha comes the day after the Day of Arafah, the high point of the Hajj pilgrimage. Many countries begin the month of Dhu al-Hijjah when the new crescent moon is seen, so Eid can fall a day later (and occasionally earlier) where you live. Confirm with your local mosque or Islamic authority.
What Eid al-Adha marks
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, remembers the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. Families attend Eid prayers in the morning, and those who can afford it sacrifice an animal and share the meat with family, neighbours and people in need.
How long the holiday lasts
The festival lasts four days, from the 10th to the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah. Public holidays vary by country, from one day in some places to a week or more in others.
