Who St. Patrick was

Patrick was a 5th-century missionary and bishop who became the patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain, he was captured as a teenager and taken to Ireland as a slave, escaped, and later returned as a missionary. Tradition says he died on March 17, which became his feast day.

A day off in some places

March 17 is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, a bank holiday in Northern Ireland, and a holiday on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. When it falls on a weekend, the day off in Ireland moves to the following Monday. In most other countries it is a normal working day, even where the parties are biggest.

Parades and green rivers

Some of the largest celebrations are outside Ireland. New York’s parade dates back to 1762, older than the United States itself, and since 1962 Chicago has dyed its river bright green for the day.
